Stewart Downing has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in a night-club row. The Reds winger was arrested at around 1am on Sunday morning after a confrontation in a club in Yarm, near Middlesborough. Downing was allegedly involved in an altercation with an ex-partner at the Cross Keys club on Yarm High Street. A police spokesman confirmed: “Police were called to an incident at a pub on Yarm High Street. A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 32-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assault. “Both are in custody and inquiries are ongoing.” England international Downing was born in Middlesbrough and came up through the club’s youth system before moving to Aston Villa in 2009, and then on to Liverpool in the summer for £18m.
