Alex Ferguson Hits Out At Liverpool & Poyet In Suarez Race Row

Sir Alex Ferguson has hit out at Gus Poyet’s claims that ‘Luis Suarez is 100% not a racist’, saying they are ‘inappropriate’. Liverpool striker Suarez has been charged by the FA with abuse that ‘included a reference to the ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race of Patrice Evra’ but Brighton boss Poyet defended his countryman in an interview with talkSPORT. Manchester United manager Ferguson admits he understands why Poyet has leapt to Suarez’s defence but thinks he should have thought through the repercussions of his comments first. “I’m surprised by Gus Poyet’s remarks,” Ferguson said. “I think they are inappropriate at a time when people throughout the world are condemning racism. I think he has chosen the wrong time. “I can understand why he wants to support somebody from his country but he has to think more [about the impact of what he is saying].” Ferguson also aimed a swipe at Liverpool, who he believes have been leaking information from the Suarez/Evra case in an attempt to influence the verdict. “We have been asked by the FA not to say anything about the Evra situation and we have abided by that,” he added. “I think Liverpool have been drip-feeding a lot of stuff out in the last couple of weeks but, at the end of the day, the FA will deal with it.”
